The Army of the Potomac was created after the defeat of Union forces at the First Battle of Bull Run. Its objective was to defend Washington, D.C. by protecting the Potomac River entry into the city. The Army of the Potomac participated in the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days' Battles, Antietam, Gettysburg and Appomatox. Paul E. Wilson (1913-2001) graduated from the University of Kansas and Washburn University Law School. Having been admitted to the Kansas Bar in 1940, he served as Osage County attorney and assistant Attorney General of Kansas. It was in this latter capacity that he represented the state during the Brown v. Board of Education landmark case.
